Uniquely set on three islands on Castle Lake, it is the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. The castle was originally built in the early 1600s by King Christian IV. Tragically, a fire broke out in 1859, and the greater part of the interior of the castle was destroyed – except the Chapel which remains largely intact and is where the kings and queens of Denmark are still anointed today. The castle was immaculately restored by J. C. Jacobsen, the owner of the Carlsberg Breweries in the 1800s and as well as a palace, it is now the magnificent home of Denmark’s Museum of National History with an extensive portrait collection. On exiting the castle, wander the majestic Baroque manicured and styled gardens and grounds. Next, you’ll head to Kronborg Castle, the spectacular setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet! It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The castle towers above a very narrow promontory on the tip of Zealand and overlooks the Oresund Sound between the coasts of Denmark and Sweden.
