Itinerary

  • Centraal Station

    We start our canal tour in front of Amsterdam's architectual masterpieces by famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers. Also the architect of the Rijksmuseum.

  • St. Nicholas Basilica

    At the former harbour front we find the Saint Nicolas Church, patron of sailors.

  • Weeping Tower

    The last remaining tower of Amsterdam's city defence, build in 1487.

  • NEMO Science Museum

    NEMO's motto is Hands On! The objects in NEMO are often experimental setups where the visitor can investigate a scientific phenomenon in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology and behavioral sciences.     Willet-Holthuysen House at Herengracht 605 in Amsterdam, a national monument, is a canal house open to the public with fully furnished period rooms. The museum gives an impression of life in a chic building on the Amsterdam canal belt in the 18th and 19th centuries.

When Felix Meritis reopened on September 25, 2020, the fourth technology domain was added.

The museum is located in a seventeenth-century canal house, with classic period rooms, a permanent multimedia exhibition, a canal garden and temporary exhibitions on the first floor.

    The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is a museum in Amsterdam for modern and contemporary art and design, founded in 1874. In 1895 the museum opened in a new building on Paulus Potterstraat, near the Rijksmuseum.

  • Concertgebouw

    The Royal Concertgebouw, opened on April 11, 1888, is a building with several concert halls, located on Van Baerlestraat opposite Museumplein in Amsterdam. It is the home of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

  • Emperor's Canal (Keizersgracht)

    The first part of the Keizersgracht (between Brouwersgracht and (approximately) the current Leidsegracht) was dug in the summer of 1615 on the initiative of mayor Frans Hendricksz. Oetgens, city carpenter Hendrick Jacobsz Staets and city surveyor Lucas Jansz Sinck. The Keizersgracht, named after Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire,[1] is the widest canal in the center of Amsterdam, namely one hundred Amsterdam feet, i.e. 28.31 meters. A remarkable detail is that the Keizersgracht was dug later than the Prinsengracht (which was dug in 1614), while the Keizersgracht is the second canal of the three main canals.

  • Houseboat Museum

    At the Amsterdam Houseboat Museum, you get the chance to experience first-hand what it’s like to live on the canals in a houseboat in Amsterdam. The museum is located in the “Hendrika Maria”, a former cargo ship built in 1914. The cargo hold is now a cosy living space featuring all the conveniences and a surprising amount of space and comfort.

  • Gay Monument

    The Homomonument is a memorial on the Westermarkt, located between the Westerkerk and the Keizersgracht in the city center of Amsterdam. The monument was unveiled on September 5, 1987 and consists of three pink granite triangles, arranged to form a large triangle.

    It serves to commemorate all gay men and women who have been persecuted because of their orientation and to inspire and support them in their struggle for recognition and against oppression and discrimination.

  • Westertoren

    This renaissance style tower was finished in 1638. It is Amsterdam's most famous tower and at the hart of the Jordaan neighbourhood. The tower is also subject of a very famous local folk song in typical 'Jordanees' croner style.

  • Westerkerk

    The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1631 in Renaissance style according to designs by master builder Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621). He is buried in the Zuiderkerk. The Westerkerk was completed under the leadership of his son Pieter de Keyser (1595-1676) and put into use on June 8, 1631. The church has a length of 58 meters and a width of 29 meters. The high central nave is flanked by the two lower side aisles. The three-aisled basilica has a rectangular plan with two transepts of equal dimensions. As a result, the floor plan took the shape of two connected Greek crosses.

  • Anne Frank House

    The Anne Frank House is a museum at Westermarkt 20 in Amsterdam in memory of Anne Frank and her Jewish family who went into hiding during the Second World War. The museum was built around their hiding place, the Achterhuis at Prinsengracht 263, where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary Het Achterhuis.

  • Brouwersgracht

    Vanaf 1612 werd vanaf de Brouwersgracht de grachtengordel in zuidelijke richting gegraven. De gracht dankt sinds 1594 zijn naam aan de vele bierbrouwerijen die in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw in deze buurt waren te vinden. Vanaf 1782 zit aan de Brouwersgracht bij de Driehoekstraat de laatste Amsterdamse distilleerderij van jenever en likeuren: De Ooievaar. De meeste pakhuizen, gebouwd voor de opslag van goederen, zijn omgebouwd tot woonhuizen.

  • Nieuwe Haarlemmersluis

    The Nieuwe Haarlemmersluis was completed in 1602 as a lock in the sea dike around the city, to prevent seawater from flowing into the canals at high tide. The old city wall originally stood on the site of the new lock, which was demolished from 1601 to expand the city westward
